The sweet tasting and on-the-go snack has a long history! Did you know that bananas are the fruit of Musa acuminata? The term Acuminata means long-pointed or tapering, referring to the flowers giving birth to the fruit. Banana is the most popular fresh fruit in all over the world and its name comes from the Arabic word ‘banan’, which means finger.
Farmers in Southeast Asia and Papua New Guinea first domesticated bananas. The cultivation of bananas goes back to 5000 to 8000 BCE. In 63 to 14 B.C., Antonius Musa, a personal physician of Roman emperor Octavius Augustus was credited for his achievement and promotion of this exotic African fruit.

Portuguese colonists brought bananas to Europe from West Africa in the early fifteenth century. Its Guinean name banema, which became banana in English, was first found in print in the seventeenth century.
The original banana has been cultivated and used since ancient times. While the banana was found in Africa, its origins are said to be of East Asia and Oceania.

How do you choose your Banana?
Always choose the most firm, bright in appearance and damage free bananas. Bruise or discoloration indicates decay and waste. The state of ripeness is indicated by skin color. The quality is best when the banana has reached a solid yellow color with brown speckles. At this stage, the flesh is mellow and the flavor is fully developed.
Want to ripen your Bananas quickly?
To make the ripening process faster, add one or two well-ripened bananas to the unripe bananas and store them in a sealed container like a paper bag. In a day or two, you will see your bananas ripe and ready to eat!
How to store your Bananas?
It is ideal to store your bananas in room temperature for them to last few days and also to prevent them from ripening too fast. It is not advisable to refrigerate the bananas as they affect the ripening process due to the cool temperature.
